Blessed Assurance, Jesus is Mine, our middle hymn this morning, is one of the most beloved hymns of the American Christian church. The text was written by the prolific poet Fanny Crosby in 1873. She wrote these words to complete a new tune written by her friend, Phoebe Knapp, daughter of a Methodist minister and wife of the founder of the Metropolitan Life Insurance Co. Fanny Crosby was blind from birth. She penned more than 8,000 gospel song texts in her 95 years of life. When she read a poem to the United States Senate in session, she was the first woman to be heard publicly in the Senate chamber.
